Osun REC not morally fit to conduct August 9 gov election —Omisore

Former deputy governor of Osun State and one of the governorship aspirants on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Iyiola Omisore on Sunday in Osogbo said the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Osun, Mr Oluwatoyin Akeju, was not morally fit to conduct the forthcoming August 9 gubernatorial election in the state, saying the electorate and the political parties have no confidence and trust in him.
He described his continued stay as the head of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Osun as illegal, taking into consideration a Federal High Court judgment in 2011 which confirmed his affinity with the national leader of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and his membership of the then Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).
Fielding questions from newsmen at a programme organised by the Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Osun State chapter, Senator Omisore “We are going to resist maximally any attempt to rig the governorship election in Osun. We sued Akeju to court that he was a staff of Tinubu. The court gave an order that he should not conduct election in Osun in 2011; he flouted the order. This time around we would allow him to conduct any election.”
Wondering why the chairman of INEC, Professor Attahiru Jega was still retaining Akeju in Osun as REC, he contended that PDP and other political parties would leave no stone unturned to ensure that Akeju did not conduct the governorship poll, adding that recently, “we confronted him with pictorial and documented evidences linking him with Tinubu in newspaper adverts and he could not defend himself.”

While accusing Governor Aregbesola of allegedly plunging the state into debt crisis, totaling N413billion, Senator Omisore said “As at today, the 2013 budget of Osun recorded a deficit of 72.79per cent. With the current debt profile, it means Osun is owing as much as 150 per cent of Ondo’s debt and 300 per cent  of Ogun’s debt. These two states are far stronger in terms financial status than Osun”.
“We are in a serious mess in Osun. But, I am on rescue mission and we would tackle all the myriad of problems created by Aregbesola by the time we assume power this year by the grace of God. The capital flight to Lagos has worsened the economy of this state. Even labourers, artisans and other skilled personnel are brought from Lagos to work in Osun, thus rendering our people jobless,” he remarked.
