Old students urge Aregbesola to review education policy
The Old Students Association of
Ilesa Grammar School in Ilesa, Osun State, has urged Governor Rauf
Aregbesola to review some aspects of his administration’s education
policy.
At a press conference to commemorate the
school’s 80th anniversary, the association’s Vice-President, Adedoyin
Adelekun, urged the governor not to change the school’s name to Ilesa
High School.
Adelekun said the issue of same uniform for public schools should also be revisited.
He said the association was not opposed to the education reforms, but was against renaming the school.
Adelekun said the old students cherish the name of the school and see the school as part of their legacy.
He said: “Ilesa Grammar School is a
unique school with a unique history that should not be tampered with.
Established 80 years ago, the school has a place in history as the first
Grammar school in Ijesha land and the first in Osun State. Why should
we toy with the idea of committing such a monumental chapter of history
and heritage of our people to the dung-hill?
“If Oxford University and Harvard
University could be allowed in that clime to survive the vagaries of
modernisation and civilisation over centuries, why can’t we borrow a
leaf from there and situate Ilesa Grammar School in the same bracket,”
he said.
He said the school would, during its
anniversary celebration, honour distinguished old students, including the
General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor
Enoch Adeboye; former Chief Judge of the Federation, Justice Alfa
Begore and former Lagos State Governor Lateef Jakande.
