Letter to INEC on Ekiti, Osun polls
The Independent National Electoral Commission
(INEC) should start preparing for the Ekiti and Osun states
gubernatorial election now. What happened in Anambra last year should
not be repeated. The Commission had enough time to prepare, yet it
disappointed the people by not being able to conduct a smooth election.
There are all indications that the elections in these two South-West states will be tougher than that of Anambra. This is because the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) would do anything to keep the states, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will also do everything to reclaim the states.
Victory of either political party will also go a long way in defining what happens in the region in the 2015 elections. If the APC can retain those states, then the PDP should forget about winning in the region in 2015, but if the PDP can win these states, then there is hope for the party in the region in the next general elections.
Therefore, going by the importance of these elections, I hope INEC can first send its officials on electoral courses. This will make them gain more knowledge on how to administer an election.
INEC should also never underestimate any election. The supplementary election in Anambra showed that the commission underestimated the number of people who would come out to vote.
We don’t want a repeat of such costly gambling in Osun and Ekiti.
