RLG begins production of computers, phones in Osun

A leading mobile telephones producing company, RLG has inaugurated an assembly plant in Ilesa, Osun State, to produce mobile phones, laptops and tablets.

The Chief Operating Officer of the RLG, Mr. Taiwo Latilo, said in an interview with our correspondent at the inauguration of the plant that RLG would begin with the assembling of the devices.

According to him, the facility will assemble 5,000 mobile phones, 2,500 laptops daily.

He explained that the RLG factory in Ilesa was established in collaboration with the state government.

He said the state had 49 per cent equity while RLG had 51 per cent in the plant.

Latilo said that 90 per cent of the components of the devices would be manufactured in the state in the next five years.

The COO said that the relative stability of power supply in Osun was one of the attractive incentives for the company to establish in the state.

 He said, “The factory is a fruition of a government/private partnership. The plant is designed to assemble a minimum of 5,000 mobile phones and 2,500 laptops per day.

“The facility also has a training centre, research & development lab and a corporate office building.  Also installed at the facility is Green Technology – Biogas plant, which will provide cooking gas for the staff quarters and also has the capacity to generate 3KVA electricity which can be used for lighting.

“The facility has the capacity to employ 10,000 people directly and indirectly. The first set of employees are the beneficiaries of the Osun Youth Empowerment Scheme Technology, a programme set up by the state government to equip youths in ICT and it was implemented by the RLG Training Institute. A total of 20,000 beneficiaries will be trained in this programme.

“The first set of 5,000 beneficiaries has graduated already. The launch of this factory will bring together all stakeholders from around the world, especially where we have business interests.”

Governor Rauf Aregbesola said that many more investors would soon come to the state because his administration had created an environment conducive for businesses to thrive.

He said, “Nigeria is a sleeping giant but it will wake up by 2015. Osun State will be the headquarters of ICT in Africa.

“The company has graduated the first batch of 5,000 beneficiaries and trained 200 of the beneficiaries at its assembly plant in Ghana.”

“To this end, RLG, in partnership with the state, has built its biggest assembly plant in Ilesha, to provide employment and strategically key into the industry, which today relies solely on importation.”

The governor said that the technology city in Ilesa would soon begin to produce different kinds of electronics aside from telephone sets and computers.

The Owa Obokun of Ilesha, Oba Adekunle Aromolaran, expressed happiness about the establishment of the plant.

He said that technology remained one of the solutions to the problem of underdevelopment confronting Africa.
