Timely intervention of policemen from the Osun State Command, on Tuesday, checkmated a violent clash between some supporters and thugs of the All Progressive Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at Ogo Oluwa, Osogbo, the state capital.
One of the governorship aspirants of the PDP, in the state, Honourable Oluwole Oke, was at the party’s secretariat, which is almost opposite the APC’s secretariat, to formally declare his ambition.
At the APC secretariat, leaders of the party in 30 local governments trooped in to collect materials for the registration of their members at the grassroot.
But, trouble ensued when some suspected thugs of the APC, armed with cutlasses, bottles, axes and other dangerous weapons attempted to attack members of the PDP, who converged on their party secretariat to witness the declaration of Honourable Oke.
By the time the clash began, some of the thugs pursued themselves into the neighbourhoods, but the Police, who were mounting security at the area were able to checkmate the violent clash and restore normalcy.
While this reporter was attempting to take some pictures at the scene, he was spotted by some thugs, donning APC T-shirts, who pursued him with cutlasses, bottles and cudgels to the other side of the expressway, where he took refuge in a one-storey building.
The thugs, stormed the building and threatened to burn it if the reporter was not released to them. However, the people denied that anybody ran inside their premises.
The occupants of the building had to lock up this reporter inside one of the offices for two hours, padlocked the gates and left the premises, to create the impression that nobody was inside because some the thugs were still loitering around.
After about two hours, they came back and gave this reporter a set of new clothes so that the thugs would not recognise him when leaving.
The Tribune management had to call the State Security Service (SSS) operatives in Osogbo to help its staff. The SSS operations eventually were able to ensure he was safely rescued, after about two hours in the building.
