How PDP can regain Osun this year —Wole Oke Declares for Osun gov race today
A governorship aspirant on the platform of the
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State, Honourable Wole Oke, has
disclosed that the party would successfully dislodge Governor Rauf
Aregbesola in the August 9, 2014 governorship election in the state if
it adopted the formula which gave it victory over former Governor
Adebisi Akande of the defunct Alliance for Democracy (AD) in 2003.
Oke, will officially declare his intention to run for governorship seat of Osun State, in Osogbo, today.
Honourable Oke, a former chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Defence, made this disclosure when he led members of his campaign team to the Imalefalafia, Ibadan headquarters of the Nigerian Tribune on a courtesy visit on Monday, ahead of the formal declaration of his governorship ambition today.
He was received by the management team led by the MD/Editor-in-Chief, Mr Edward Dickson; the Editor, Nigerian Tribune, Alhaji Debo Abdulai; the Editor, Sunday Tribune, Alhaji Sina Oladeinde and the Editor, Saturday Tribune, Mr Lasisi Olagunju and other senior members of management.
According to the two-term member of the Green Chamber, PDP was able to dislodge Chief Akande from the Abere Government House by giving the governorship ticket to Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, who was from the same zone as the then incumbent governor, in 2003.
Oke, who disclosed that the people of the state had become completely disconnected from their resources under the Aregbesola administration in the state, said that the state would witness a massive turn around if he was given the opportunity of managing its destiny.
“In fact, one of the reasons why I am running is that the incumbent governor is from Ife/Ijesa district.
“If I don’t run and he gets the ticket, then I would have allowed my people to be short-changed.
“If PDP sincerely wants to win the election, it should pick me as a candidate from Aregbesola’s zone and dislodge him from his base.
“If my kinsman is exited without me taking over, then we are losers.
Responding, the MD/Editor-in-Chief of the Nigerian Tribune, Mr Edward Dickson, thanked Honourable Oke for his visit, promising that the paper would not shelve its tradition of providing a level-paying field for all aspirants in the race to realise their political ambition through adequate coverage of their activities.
The 46-year-old Oke, who is running under the umbrella of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said he decided to run for the governorship seat because “those saddled with the responsibility to put things right have not been sensitive to the needs of the people.”
Speaking with Nigerian Tribune, on Monday, Oke stated that because “a grim tale of pervasive decadence appears unrelenting and also because impunity and perversion are at unprecedented scale,” he decided to run as the viable alternative to the “thick despondency and gloom that have virtually overtaken all the nooks and crannies of the state.”
Pointing out problems that needed to be fixed in the state, Oke said the state once known as the most culturally advanced in the sub region had regressed into a state of “unimaginable mediocrity, to say the least,” and that, was unacceptable.
While rolling out his developmental plans for the state, Oke said he would ensure that the economy of the state improved by turning the state into an economic hub by developing the agriculture sector of the state and promoting the state as an international tourism market potential.
