OAU set to host 2014 NUGA games

After series of postponements, all is now set for the hosting of the 24th edition of the National Universities Games (NUGA) by the Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife. The game which could not hold last year due to the 5-months old Academic Staff Union (ASUU) strike, is now scheduled for February 12 and 22, 2014.
As a first time host since the inception of the game in 24 years, reports from OAU say the institution has provided all the necessary facilities to have a successful outing. Investigation by National Mirror reveals that all events will be held within the campus, the first time a host will not be relying on external facilities for the NUGA games.
“It’s not possible to host a competition featuring over 15 events in the same environment but OAU has all the facilities within the campus,” a source who pleaded anonymity told National Mirror.
It was gathered that OAU was chosen to host this edition to commemorate the university’s 50th anniversary and National Mirror can confirm that the institution has spared no effort to ensure that the games turns out as the best ever in its 24-year history.
The Local Organising Committee LOC was in Lagos last August to unveil the mascot of the game, with ace footballers, Mutiu Adepoju, Ann Chiejinne, Nollywood stars, Afees Oyetoro (Saka), Bayo Bankole (Boy Alinco), and Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin emerging as ambassadors for the game. Sources at the university also disclosed that the sporting facilities have all been renovated to international standard.
These include an Olympic-sized swimming pool, an eight-lane modern tartan track, modified sports halls and a good drainage systems to prevent erosion on the Osun State governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola shaking the NUGA mascot (left) with the OAU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Tale Omole during the unveiling of the logo for the games in Lagos. pitch.
Athletics track and sanitation of the swimming pool are also reportedly in place. Speaking to National Mirror on the successful completion of the facilities, the Public Relations Officer of the University, Mr. Abiodun Olarewaju, said the university had invested heavily in the games.
“When we decided to build a new track for the school, we looked beyond NUGA because we wanted something that would serve the school and even the country long after the games. We are happy that we have this swimming pool and the modern tracks, which experts have confirmed as the best you can get anywhere in the world”.
On the security aspect, the Assistant Inspector General of Police, zone 11 Oshogbo, Mr. David Omojola who visited the institution with his men to inspect the level of preparedness, has assured the authorities of OAU of safety of lives and properties of all participants, students and all members of staff within the university community and its environ during the games.
He assured that they would ensure adequate security within and outside the campus, adding that efforts had been put in place to improve the welfare of staff of the force in order to enhance their performance.
