Akande decries poor reading culture
The Chairman, Governing Council of Osun State College of Education, Ila-Orangun, Mr. Niyi Akande, has attributed the poor technological development in the country to poor research work and reading culture in tertiary institutions.
At the inauguration of expert panel to review the performance of the Osun State College of Education, Ila-Orangun’s library and draw a five-year strategic plan for its future development, Akande said that the poor quality research work in tertiary institutions of learning to emergence of new information media such as internet and others which have reduced quality reseach work and reading culture.
According to him, “the new emerging information media and other modern information facilities today pose serious challenge to proper operation of libraries, the reading culture and adequate research all over the world.”
The trend, according to him, must not be allowed to phase out library in higher institutions of learning.
He declared that the readiness of the college to perform its social responsibility by impacting on the neighbouring community through functional library facility in the area.
The chairman, Governing Council noted that availability of functional library in higher institutions is not just to fulfill all righteousness, as hand-out production in tertiary institutions is now the order of the day.
Akande disclosed that the panel among others will review the performance of the Osun State College of Education library and fashion out how best it can assist the students and the entire community.
He assured that the college will make use of the advantage of the information media, such as internet but not at the expense of library facility and proper conduct of research in the institution.
Members of the panel were drawn from various universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, Ministry of Education, Osun State and other exparts in library education in the country.
